ALBERT HAMMOND JR Spaceland Black Seal Website
I finally got a chance to follow up a very recent review of an album with a review of the live performance. Friday night, we headed out to Spaceland in Silverlake to catch Albert Hammond, Jr. When we got there, around 9:30 PM, we saw a line of people outside, wrapped around the venue and up the street! Worried that we might be forced to stand further back and not be able to take any decent photos, we opted for parking the car up the hill, skipped the hassle of circling around looking for an open spot on the main street and sprinted our way down. We found out the line was for the hopefuls waiting on limited tickets that the venue was selling at the door. Lucky for us, we need not to wait in line.

Once inside, we stood around for a bit, noticing two other members of The Strokes and Papa Hammond in the crowd 'til the two opening bands (The Shys and The Parlor Mob)performed. We were feeling antsy half way through The Parlor Mob's performance. At around 12 AM, Albert Hammond Jr. and his band took the stage and the fun began.

They opened with "101", which elevated the mood (and the strength of our legs) up several notches. From then on, I don't think it ever turned back down 'til the night was over. The set list of the night combined songs from his albums, Yours to Keep and his newest, Como Te LLama?. I must say, if you enjoyed the albums, you'll definitely love the show. Every little sound heard on the recordings were brought to live on stage and performed very tightly. They also played some of my favorites, "In My Room" and "Holiday". I should note as well, Albert Hammond Jr. and the rest of his band just went through two canceled flights, lost all of their luggage and equipments and still, that night they put on a vibrant show.

Towards the end of the night, we crawled ourselves out of the front rows of people and unlike any other shows we've been to, where further in the back we usually find people chattering and into the drinks on their hands more than the band playing, this time we found them with their eyes glued to the stage and on their feet dancing. They performed about 15 songs and yet, it felt much shorter. We definitely left wanting to hear and see more. If you're a fan of Albert Hammond Jr., I think you ought to catch him and his band live this summer. If you're a NOT YET a fan of Albert Hammond Jr., I think you TOO should catch him and his band live this summer.

Check out some of the photos we took of Albert Hammond Jr., here.
