It was a Tuesday night and I was ready to close my far-from-great day (read: car wrecked) with a little show at the El Rey. The little show we went to turned out to be a much more than awesome show.
Black Kids, a Jacksonville, Florida five piece was in town and a Bay Area group,
LoveLikeFire, whose album I've reviewed here many moons ago, opened the show.
I had listened to
Black Kids debut album,
Partie Traumatic, and felt a bit iffy about the show. Mainly, I feared that it was going to be packed with squealing teenagers and that I'd be annoyed. I was wrong and found myself enjoying the night instead. After,
LoveLikeFire concluded their short, but notable set,
Black Kids took (and shook) the stage.
They performed many, if not close to all of the songs from their debut album. The energy was up the entire night, even during "I'm Making Eyes At You", which the song they claimed to be the closest they've ever gotten to a ballad. Paired
Black Kids' disco-heavy performance with the El Rey Theater's lighting set up, I felt like we were transported in a time machine to some time in the 1980s... except, this time around I was already an adult and not barely learning to walk. My favorite of the night was "Love Me Already", which tells a funny, surprise story. I also wanted to note that bass player,
Owen Holmes, who was on the sideline for the most part and out of the spotlight, deserves a round of applause as his running bass lines carried on through the night and definitely defined the band's 80's sound.
Black Kids really put on a fun and seconds-worthy performance. Singer and guitar player,
Reggie Youngblood and his sister,
Ali's, vocals were near recording quality. They're both very animated on stage and seeing them, it's almost impossible to not want to shake a finger along. Before the encore, they played what the audience had been itching to hear, their hit single "I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You" and there, I thought, I felt an earthquake in Southern California all over again. This time, tho, the epicenter was at the El Rey Theater.
We had fun and I think it shows in
this photo set, too. I hope you'll catch them on tour soon. Like, tonight!
