I'm participating in the
National Blog Posting Month and every day in November, yes including the weekend, I will be posting a blog, except that in my case it'd be a review. Realizing that I may not be able to write an album review a day, I will also sneak in some song reviews. I think this would be a great discipline challenge more than anything. Dave is already scoffing when I told him my plan. To him I said, you'll just say see... you'll see.
I thought
Donny Hue And The Colors would be great to start the month off. With a stream of singer/songwriter, it gets hard to not be biased and compared one to another so closely. As with any field, there's always the cream of the crop and
Donny Hue And The Colors is definitely one of the few. I was first struck by the video for "Good Time Happening".
You can watch it right here. The video is made of over 1,500 photographs and the result is a 3-minute long stop-motion-animation galore. The album,
Tell Tall Tales, is just as awesome as the video.
Tell Tall Tales is a collection of songs written and self recorded by
Donny Hue in Brooklyn. The digital album will be out on November 11.
I know it's such a cliche to compare any singer/songwriter to
Bob Dylan and people often so loosely made the comparison. At a
Jenny Lewis show recently, someone in the crowd yelled out "Female Bob Dylan!" and I cringed. So, I'm a bit worry to pull one right now. But, I couldn't help but thought of some similarities between
Donny Hue's songs to
Bob Dylan. I concluded it is the raw, stripped down songs that's striking me as familiar. But, what I enjoyed the most from
ell Tall Tales, is the often quirky, almost child-like honesty in his lyrics that fit along his music. I could almost picture the people, places and situations he sings about.
