Exactly about a week ago today, I headed out to The Roxy and saw
Sonya Kitchell perform with
The Slip. First up, a member of
The Slip and multi instrumentalist,
Brad Barr, performed songs from his solo album,
The Fall Apartment. The acoustic folk meets classical guitar meets experimental songs are soothing. My favorite was an instrumental song inspired by the sounds of harp that came from Brad's apt neighbor, called "Sarah Through The Wall". It reminds me of a song my guitar teacher used to (try to) teach me. Only
Brad Barr's is way better. You can listen to "Sarah Through The Wall" on
Brad Barr's
myspace.
Soon after,
Sonya Kitchell took the stage. It's a shame that not many people were in attendance because I thought
Sonya Kitchell and
The Slip's performance was great. Even though, there were only a few people in the crowd, they're still full of energy and sharp. Her deep and alluring voice reminds me of
Joss Stones and
KT Tunstall. Along with
The Slip,
Sonya Kitchell plays guitar and writes folk and blues-inspired pop songs. Canadian band,
The Slip, who were her touring band, also helped produce her latest album,
This Storm. You may not take my words, but
Herbie Hancock, a prominent artist in jazz, hand-picked her to sing in his band as he went on tour last year. I'd say that's a good reason to check out her performance as well.
