At The Echoplex
SPINTO BAND At The Echoplex Park The Van Website
Not too long ago, my friends and I saw Beautiful Losers, a documentary that follows a group of contemporary artists who got together to create something with no other reason but a shared love of doing it and resulted in a touring art exhibit. Ed Templeton, a skateboarder and one of the artists in Beautiful Losers, talks about making art as a natural activity of a child and that some people like himself are lucky enough to never let that go. The same I thought is true with the Spinto Band. When I first saw them packing up a small stage at the Spaceland a couple of years back, I saw a group of friends (and siblings) playing music and having fun. Their playful and childlike presence shown not only in their highly animated performance but also in their songs. Dave and I quickly became fans.

I was worried like a few of my favorite bands that they might lose their quality once they gain a bit more exposure and success. I was wrong. As proven with their latest album, Moonwink, and when I saw them perform at the Echoplex in Los Angeles recently. They're just as exciting to watch as before and without being stagy. The quirks and creativity that I enjoy from their previous album Nice and Nicely Done are also present in Moonwink. Their music is still polished and well crafted. If anything that was notably different this time around, the crowd was bigger and the Spinto Band were a bit more political. The political notion was expected as we saw them the night before the election and by then, who wasn't political? More importantly, they look like they're genuinely having fun and definitely haven't let go of their youthful quality.

Check out the photos we took at the show, here.
